The PSOne cult classic L.S.D.: Dream Emulator provides an experience exactly as it sounds - it is one big gigantic drug trip, but it sure makes for some crazy visuals. The doujin title ElePaper Action is a unique beat-em-up from the folks who made Recettear, using the stars of the anime Read or Die, where the heroines fight evil through the use of paper. (It's somewhat better than it sounds.) Psycho-Nics Oscar has a strange name, but it's a quality side-scrolling arcade game featuring the Gradius power-up system. And while we normally don't cover many Atari 2600 games, Imagic's No Escape! is a unique enough blending of genres that it stands out. Plus, Part II of Operation: Get It Together is to start updating some older articles, the first of which is coverage of the Sin and Punishment sequel, which is quite excellent.

11/19 Update - LSD, ElePaper Action, Psycho-Nics Oscar, No Escape!, Sin and Punishment: Star Successor

Hmm, I think the evangelion reference mentioned in Elepaper Action might be a nausicaa reference.. the 7 days of fire bit. There's a short glimpse of it at 0:10 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wSba9hwCaU
ReplyDeleteNow that you that you bring it up, I think you might be right, though I swear I remember something similar in Eva too.
ReplyDeleteHardcore Nitpicking 101: There's a 1 missing in the date!
ReplyDeleteif you like nitpicking, then you'll love 'better' being misspelt as 'batter'.
ReplyDeletemmmmmmmmmm, batter than it sounds.
ReplyDeleteSince Eva also has huge humanoids and fire and destruction.. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for some great writing by the way. I mentioned you a couple of years ago on Gamasutra in a discussion on game journalism ..and misspelled your name.
But since you're not unfamiliar with Gamasutra, maybe it's a good idea to get extra traffic and potentially donators by crossposting your blog or maybe merge it? I'm not sure how evil United Business Media is.. but there was a recent influx of "journalist/writers" (suggests money available :) and they keep featuring some "retro game" member blog..
Once I get an actual content management system on to the main site, the blog will be merged there, so I hope that might work. I'll check out Gamasutra though. They actually reprinted a few HG101 articles there awhile back.
ReplyDeleteShouldn't the Sin and Punishment article be moved from individual games to series now that it's about two games?
ReplyDeleteProbably. I'm thinking of getting rid of that classification altogether, though. It made sense in the early days of the site, when there was a stricter delineation between the two, but not so much anymore.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I like the classification. Sometimes, you want to lose yourself in a multi-page in-depth article about a series, and sometimes, you just wanna kill a few minutes by reading a brief article about a single game.
ReplyDeleteOf all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.
