I personally love any competition that encourages artistic creativity, so this is just the kind of thing I like to see. I’ve entered, and so should you. It’s fun!

As explained by Sega’s PR blurb:
We here at SEGA love self-expression, and what better way to express yourself than to design some digital graffiti for our upcoming release Jet Set Radio! This is your chance to become a part of videogame history! We’re looking for 18 winning pieces of graffiti to add to the game. So break out your favourite graphics program, flex that artistic muscle of yours, and take a shot at winning this fabulous Jet Set Radio prize pack – including two digital copies of the game for either the PS3 or X360, a Jet Set Radio branded hoodie, a Jet Set Radio branded beverage shaker, and the Etón Rukus Solar – Portable Blue Tooth Sound System with Solar Panel!

More details can be found at the official URL:
http://www.sega.com/jsrcontest/

You need to create three pieces in the following sizes:
512x128
256x128
128x128

Be sure to read the rules, they’re pretty strict regarding ownership rights of any submitted entries. They require any entries be entirely new creations, so as long as you’re comfortable handing over indefinite rights, it should be fine.

The only problem now is waiting for it to finish – such is my eagerness for the world to see my disturbing new creations. In case you’re wondering, it’s nothing to do with my previous artistic endeavour, Adventures of Coffeetableman.

  3. We didn't feel like paying artists, so why don't you work for us, unpaid ?

  5. I'm a pretty cynical guy, so I can understand the sentiment. But in fairness this isn't a sequel or a remake, it's just a port and all the art already exists.

More likely it's a low cost form of publicity, rather than a low cost attempt to acquire art assets (which would be pretty low-cost anyway with in-house staff and a back catalogue of work).

Personally, I really like the idea of leaving my mark on a game, even if it's unpaid. It's not like I'm going to profit from my three wacky sketches anyway.

Unless in 6 months time I see one of them as the leading mascot in a new Sega game...

I think it's all just a bit of fun, really.

  6. whatever happend to that huge databse of art made ingame from the original? did sega 'lose' all that or did they just forget it exists?

naturally they'd have to ignore the thousands of amatuer dick art but i'm sure there were some gems in there. maybe they can't use it for legal reasons, maybe they're just silly.

  8. Maybe it's 18 pieces that might replace the "band" graffiti sets from the English release / De La Jet Set Radio. Y'know, the Rob Zombie / Jurassic 5 / Cold / etc. stuff.

    1. I would agree with you on this one, I assume they did not get the rights to reuse the songs in the game, look at Crazy Taxi when it was rereleased, no Offspring and no Bad Religion. Except the omissions of Rob Zombie, Jurassic 5, Mix Master Mike ect. ect. I can do without because the music did not quiet flow that well IMO, I am not saying they suck or thinking Rob Zombie sucks because I love Rob Zombie and Jurassic 5, I just personally think the game would be fine without it.

  9. This is a really nooby question but when they say it has to be either 512x128
    256x128
    128x128

    does that mean 512x128 pixels?

  10. Yes, pixels. The same size in the image with the numbers (click it to enlarge to full size).
