I’ve somehow acquired over 100 Japanese Pocket Monster playing cards – Pokémon in the west. I recall a friend of mine explaining how some of his Magic The Gathering cards were valued at over £100, especially the older ones, and so I was wondering if it’s the same for these. Can anyone place a value on any of them? The 2 in a yellow box came in a plastic wallet, so I assume are rare. Are there any Pokémon trading card communities who would be interested in buying them? Putting over 100 cards on eBay individually does not appeal to me if they’re worthless. There were also 10 English cards in the pile, pictured below. If any HG101 readers know, please post in the comments! Many thanks.
I have that same surfing Pikachu card above. It came with a Shonen Jump manga I bought years ago. I hope it's very valuable too!
ReplyDeleteIt is worth about $150, actually. Since you have it, keep it in excellent condition.
DeleteJust the pikachu one? I have a lot of them, and I was wondering the same thing
DeleteI have six or seven of all the pokemon shown above what do I do with that
DeleteIt's been a long time since I collected Pokemon cards, but if I recall correctly, each has a rarity symbol in the lower-right corner. Square is common, circle is uncommon, and diamond is rare. Also at a glance, I can see that two of those English language cards are limited edition promo cards (they have the promo star just below the picture on the right side). Rares and promos may possibly be worth something, they rest, probably not. I have no idea what values for any of those might be, though.
ReplyDeleteactually, circle is common, diamond is uncommon, and a star is rare.
DeleteThe "Surfing Pikachu" (believe it or not, i found infos searching these terms ^^) is a promotional card. Its value (on amazon) is around 20$...
ReplyDeleteSource 1: http://www.mysimon.com/prices/japanese-surfing-pikachu
Source 2: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Surfing_Pikachu_%28Wizards_Promo_28%29
On pokeorder.com, BTW has like, the best prices, is selling an excellent condition japanese surfing pikachu for $149.99, but is on sale for $119.99. I won't say you are wrong, but i'm pretty sure it is worth more than $20.
DeleteIm not a expert on pokemon cards but that Pikachu on the Surf board is a Promo card along with the english ones with gold lettering. All those cards are at Least 8 or more years old. Whats with the card with the Japanese guy on it?
ReplyDeleteThis might be of help:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.pojo.com/priceguide/prices.html
It seems as though the last time this was updated was in 2005. Probably could use the site as a starting point.
From pojo.com, the prices for the ones you asked:
Surfing Pikachu - $60.00
Blaine's Moltres - $12.00
Everything else seems like you will get nothing for except for that weird looking one in between Misty and Eevee. It's Imakuni (?) and he is apparently worth $25.00
I'll give you a fiver for all of them.
ReplyDeleteDunno about the Japanese cards, but you should try to look in more for Mewtwo and Venosaur. Charizard used to sell for $100 back in the day (English) :).
ReplyDeletethey never sold for $100. Char only sold at it's peak for $50
Deleteshiny charizard now sells for up to £1500 :/
DeleteActually a first edition holographic shadowless Charizard use to go for $1000 and is currently worth more than that!! Don't know where you got $100 at its peak info from but, its way off.
DeleteThanks for the replies! I shall sift out the valuable ones and perhaps try my luck.
ReplyDeleteTwo other japanese cards in the image that may be worth looking into are:
ReplyDeleteErica's Clefable (row 8, last card on the right) - $12
Mewtwo (top row, second on the left) - $30
Obviously the prices may have changed. However, the mewtwo looks like a one I used to have which was a varient that came with some old magazine (Corocoro?) so that one is definatly worth looking into.
Good luck.
There is no such thing as korokoro
Deleteumm there may not be korokoro but there is corocoro.. and nyeeh is right about the mewtwo (40-50 bucks)
DeleteHard to say how much their worth because the Pokemon card game isn't nearly as popular as it used to be. Nobody really plays it anymore except kids. Magic The Gathering on the other hand is still very popular. Someone may tell you that a card you have is worth something, but really it's only worth what somebody is willing to pay for, and since nobody really plays the Pokemon card game anymore, I doubt you would get much. I could be wrong though. Your best bet is to see if you can find any completed auctions on eBay to see how much they've sold for recently.
ReplyDeleteI too have a huge amount of Pokemon cards (including many rare/promo cards from the first couple years of the TCG's life), but I heard that since the game isn't popular anymore, the prices for many cards have since dropped severely. Which makes me kind of sad :( I guess I'll just hang onto my cards in that case, in the hopes that someday it becomes popular again.
ReplyDeleteIt will never be popular again. I had every rare from the first 3 sets and most in foil and sold them all for $5. Your best bet is to find a die hard fan and sell them direct.
Deletethey have dropped in value but they still are worth something (at least the holos and some rares). english promo cards aren't worth much unless they are extremely rare, bc so many people got them.
DeleteBwahahah. Never say never!
DeleteMost of the older Pokémon cards are banned in Modified tournaments (the SERIOUS BUSINESS ones), so their values have dropped a lot. Even the once so expensive Charizard can occasionally go for as low as 5 bucks and unlike many others, he's still legal to play thanks to a recent reprint. Surfing Pikachu is still allowed in tournaments, though to use a Japanese copy in their deck a player would need an English reference copy outside the deck.
ReplyDeleteThe Japanese version of Misty's Tears (last card on the bottom row) used to be popular, since every boy wanted a card with naked Misty on it even if you can't really see anything. I don't think it ever was worth that much money though, since it was a Common in Japan (the English version that has no nudity was Uncommon).
I hate to disagree but most of the time a charizard goes for about 50 cents.
Deletenot true about the charizard..
DeleteI have a reshiram dont know what its worth i'd say probaly about $20 to $35.never know whats gonna happen might get $1.50 and you might get 50G or $9.3,000,000,000 just playin :)
ReplyDeletei have the machop.
ReplyDeleteI have a rydon
ReplyDeleteI have a Japanese ancient mew card, how much money is it worth?
Deleteabout 10 cents
DeleteI have 3 jappenese pocket monsters and 1 jappenese trainer. I would really like to sell them, how much are they?
ReplyDeleteunfortunately most cards that are not a promo nor holo are not worth much. there are some exceptions but most likely, there is no point selling them. sorry
DeletePokemon is worth very little mainly because it's not that old and because it's main target audience is ages 5 to 12.
ReplyDeletethats not quite true. most of the people who play and collect are 15+. do you really think a 5 year old will go buy some of the older cards that cost upwards of 50 dollars? the card game itself is quite challenging and is meant for teens and young adults. I dont play myself but i remember back in the primetime age of pokemon i found the game too confusing to play (i was 9).
DeleteI have one with a little brown bear with a moon on its fore head holding a cup of honey how much would that be worth estimated

I have a Charmeleon the evolvince of charmander with the diamond in the right corner on the bottom in japanese, anyone know how much that might be worth?
ReplyDeleteCharizard from the base set normally sells around $30 if is in nm/mint condition. 1st editions can range from 100 (bad condition) to upwards of 300 if graded. most of these cards dont really have too much value. the imakuni card can get you 25-40 if its in nm condition. the pikachu at the bottom is like 5-10, misty's tears (naked misty) is around 10, venusaur is maybe 7 in that condition, rocket moltres = 2-3, surfing pikachu = 10, your most valuable one is the japanese mewtwo at 40-50. (everything is usd)
